If you live in Michigan, you’ve most certainly heard of the Sam Bernstein Law Firm. They’ve been around forever, and their ads are ever-present during Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings games both in their respective stadiums/arenas as well as during the broadcasts on Fox Sports Detroit. Their slogan is a not-so-subtle nudge that recommends you ‘Get the Bernstein Advantage‘. There are two major things to consider here.
For one, we vet every opportunity to ensure that partnering with that business is a good fit. If for whatever reason it’s determined that we won’t be able to deliver the results they’re looking to achieve, we don’t offer our services.
And two – if a business has local competitors, we only work with one company in a geographic area. So if you’re an attorney, or an auto repair shop, or you own a lawn care company, or you run any sort of locally-based business, only one of you can hire us.
And if you do, your competitors cannot.
Recently, a local business owner reached out to me for potential search engine optimization services. Since their business is located in Grand Rapids, they wanted a local SEO company to work with. The initial conversation went well enough and the way we left things was that I would follow up the next week. Before contacting them as discussed, I began looking into their industry and the local competition for the services they provide. What I found got me very excited – there was a very promising amount of search volume for the keywords that are relevant to their business – and while there was a healthy amount of competition (Grand Rapids is the second-largest city in Michigan), many of the competitors’ sites I looked into were very poorly optimized. They were more or less ranking due to a lack of optimized competition. I became very excited because I knew I could help them – and that it probably wouldn’t take all that long to achieve the results they’re looking for, either.
So instead of waiting, I proactively called them the very next day and left a detailed voice mail describing what I’d found – after all I was excited to get started on what was looking like a great opportunity to help a local business become more successful. But after receiving no response, I called them again the following week at the initially agreed upon time. We spoke, and the business owner acknowledged having received my message. He then told me he’d already signed a contract with an out-of-state Web marketing company, citing price as a key buying decision factor. I wished him nothing but the best of luck and that precipitated the end of the conversation.
As soon as we hung up, I got to thinking about all the poorly optimized sites that I discovered and that there are many companies around here in his industry that could use some help.
