BUSINESS | SUCCESS | WEB PRESENCE
Something occurred to me recently that in almost five years of working in this industry, had never crossed my mind. It’s a thing that I’ve always known about, but never really thought to warn or inform people about. And for that reason I do want to issue an apology of sorts.
Recently, a client expressed concerns over the increased amount of SPAM he’s been receiving in his inbox since hiring Enliven to manage his Web presence and SEO efforts. It hasn’t been an excessive amount, but there has been a noticeable increase. Many other clients have also indicated similar experiences over the years. Despite all this, it never occurred to me to warn them that this could possibly happen.
For as long as the Web has existed, there’s been a cat-and-mouse game between Spammers and Web developers (and not to mention legitimate marketing pros). For every safeguard implemented and law passed designed to prevent SPAM, a new spamming technique to circumvent them is right around the corner.
SPAM will always exist as long as it’s effective. Fortunately, technology like Spam Bully and Akismet exists and does a good job of keeping the amount of SPAM to a ‘minor annoyance’ level.
If you’re an Enliven client, there are two major reasons you’re receiving more SPAM, or possibly will once you’ve hired us. The first reason is the fact that your Web presence is much broader than before.
If you’ve hired MoxieMen, whether it was to build a new website on WordPress, or to manage a PPC campaign on Google Adwords, or even if we are working to improve the search engine optimization of your existing site, your Web presence is visible to the public in more ways than ever before. And while this is a very good thing, Spammers are likely going to notice.
SPAM: Junk or unsolicited bulk email
SPAMMER: People who make the rest of us look bad

The other reason you’re likely receiving more SPAM is the fact that if you’ve hired Enliven, by doing so you’ve inherently demonstrated a willingness to invest money in your Web presence. Unfortunately, this is a byproduct of our efforts, and this in fact is going to attract some solicitations in your inbox. We do our best to install the proper safeguards, but there’s little that can be done to stop some slimy salesperson from finding you, because of course we make it super easy for them to do so.
Having said all that, I once again apologize for the likelihood that this is something you will occasionally have to deal with. But when you do, simply mark the solicitations as ‘SPAM’ and try to think of your improved Web presence as a good problem to have.
